Through six weeks of official gameplay, the high school basketball teams of Wyoming are now entering the back-half of the conference season, and Wyoming Five Star is here to break down everything you need to know before the regional tournament.
We have already identified the most competitive conferences in the state through all classifications. There are several conferences that are truly up for grabs, and a couple have been mostly decided already. We have 4 weeks before teams converge at regional tournaments, and our staff has put together an update on all eight conferences.

Mid-season Takeaways
1A Girls

This might be the most competitive class in the state. Any team in the top-five has a reasonable path to the title, including un-ranked Lingle and Lusk who received top-five votes in last week’s coaches poll. The 1A East Conference has been led by #3 Southeast and #5 Upton, but unranked Lingle, Lusk, Kaycee, and Hannah Elk Mountain will be fighting for those final two spots at the 1A East Regional (Torrington).
The 1A West Regional is held at Lander Valley High School again this year, and three of the top-five 1A teams will be in attendance. #1 Burlington (13-3), #2 Cokeville (13-2), and #4 Little Snake River will tangle for the top-two seeds. All three teams have star power, late-game heroics, and incredible coaches – making for a very exciting tournament in Lander. The final seed is up for grabs between Saratoga, Riverside, Farson-Eden, and Dubois.
Scoring Leader: Kenzie Evans (Little Snake River) — 20.9 points per game
Assists Leader: Cadence Jones (Farson-Eden) — 5.6 assists per game
Rebounds Leader: Brooklynn Paxton (Riverside) — 12.3 rebounds per game — *Most in Wyoming
Steals Leader: Izelee Hereford (Ft. Washakie) — 5.1 steals per game
2A Girls

It’s as close as ever between #1 Big Horn and #2 Sundance, who just scrapped last weekend in a 48-47 Big Horn victory. They’ll be joined by #4 Tongue River, and #5 Pine Bluffs – host of the 2A East Regional – for a gauntlet of a tournament. Aftonn Cummins (Big Horn) and Jaylin Mills (Sundance) headline the classification, and will very likely receive top-five-player votes in Wyoming Five Star’s all-class awards at the end of the season.
On the other side, #3 Wyoming Indian is the clear favorite from the 2A West. They’ll play defacto-home games at Riverton High School for regionals, where they have traditionally dominated other Fremont County teams in the conference. Greybull, and Shoshoni are the other contenders for the 2A West title, who would likely matchup with #1 Big Horn and #2 Sundance in the first round at state.
Scoring Leader: Jaylin Mills (Sundance) — 22.9 points per game
Assists Leader: Afton Cummins (Big Horn) — 5.7 assists per game
Rebounds Leader: Lilly Lozier (Kemmerer) — 12.0 rebounds per game
Steals Leader: Afton Cummins (Big Horn) — 5.4 steals per game
3A Girls

The 3A West conference is completely loaded this year. All five of the top-ranked teams are from the 3A West – which will converge in Lovell for regionals. You’ve got the frontrunning Cody Broncs, #2 Lander Valley, #3 Pinedale, #4 Lovell, and #5 Powell all in attendance. Those teams combined for 55 wins in 65 games – and unfortunately, one of these programs will not see the state tournament. The Fillies of Cody are full of upperclassmen and have dominated teams this year – they’re led by junior-guard Grace Hays, a valid candidate for Wyoming’s best player.
The 3A East conference has struggled in 2026, even the defending-champion Bearcats of Douglas. This year, Wheatland (11-4) has been very impressive, with a key win over #2 Lander Valley last week. Buffalo (6-5) is currently 4-0 in conference play, and leading the 3A East; they also host the regional tournament next month – which could be huge for the Bison. Burns, Glenrock, and Torrington will be fighting for the #4 seed going into state.
Scoring Leader: Grace Hays (Cody) — 27.0 points per game — *Most in Wyoming
Assists Leader: Ellie Talich (Cody) — 5.2 assists per game
Rebounds Leader: Sheridan Sarvey (Glenrock) — 11.4 rebounds per game
Steals Leader: Grace Hays (Cody) — 6.8 steals per game — *Most in Wyoming
4A Girls

#1 Cheyenne East (12-2) has led a very competitive 4A East conference, and look to be the frontrunners in Wyoming. The Thunderbirds are tied for most points per game (55.0, Green River), and are out to an early lead in the conference, posting a 4-0 record at the midpoint. #3 Laramie (10-4) is playing very well right now, and sports an undefeated conference record as well. The regional tournament is in Gillette this year (Campbell County High School), where #4 Thunder Basin, Cheyenne Central, and Sheridan will all be competing for the three-and-four seeds heading into state.
The 4A West conference is led by #2 Green River (12-2), and #5 Star Valley (8-4). The Wolves have played extremely well, led by the class’s top scorer, Isabel Vasco (18.2ppg). They’re chased by the Braves, who are T-1st in the conference. This conference could swing a number of ways, with the Casper schools sneaking into state, or possibly Rock Springs or Evanston securing bids. Outside of Green River and Star Valley, the entire conference have losing-overall records.
Scoring Leader: Isabel Vasco (Green River) — 18.2 points per game
Assists Leader: Taelyn Leseberg (Riverton) — 5.8 assists per game — *Most in Wyoming
Rebounds Leader: Elisabeth Needham (Chey. Central) — 9.1 rebounds per game
Steals Leader: Isabel Vasco (Green River) — 5.4 steals per game
Boys Basketball
1A Boys

The two 1A conferences are fairly even, with a mixture of teams fighting state-tournament bids. However, the 1A Class has a clear favorite – it’s the defending champions, Lingle-Ft. Laramie (14-0). They are in control of their conference (1A East), as well, leading #2 Lusk, #4 Upton, and unranked Hulett and Hannak Elk Mountain. The Doggers (basically) host the 1A East Regionals, which is only a few minutes from the host site at Torrington High School, continuing their campaign to consecutive championships, and possibly, consecutive undefeated seasons.
The 1A West conference is particularly intriguing, with #3 Saratoga and #5 Cokeville headlining. Fremont County teams, Ft. Washakie and St. Stephens have gotten a lot better this year, and could easily find a spot in the state tournament – especially with a short drive to regionals in Lander. The Snake River Rattlers are also in that boat, who have played very well this year. The goal of this conference is to stay away from the #4 seed, which would likely secure a matchup with 1A’s best team, Lingle, in the first round at state.
Scoring Leader: Kyle Smith (Hulett) — 29.0 points per game — *Most in Wyoming
Assists Leader: Ammon Hatch (Cokeville) — 6.8 assists per game — *Most in Wyoming
Rebounds Leader: Brady Cook (Lingle-Ft. Laramie) — 11.5 rebounds per game
Steals Leader: Kyle Smith (Hulett) — 5.6 steals per game — *Most in Wyoming
2A Boys

This might be the most fun-to-watch class in the entire state, with a wealth of individual talent. The class also features two-programs, who have built valid arguments for the best boys team in all classes – #1 Thermopolis and #2 Wyoming Indian. These two teams will, almost certainly, duke it out for the regional championship trophy, after an ongoing saga of electric matchups. Thermopolis’ Cody Bomengen and Zak Hastie, and Wyoming Indian’s Heeyei’Niitou Monroe-Black and Cordell Spoonhunter, are by far the best 1-2 punches in the state. It will probably take a miracle for the rest of 2A West to knock off either of these teams.
The 2A East is led by #3 Big Horn, who are packed with underclassmen, and hungry to achieve something big this year. It’s exciting to see a young program like this, led by Head Coach Cody Ball, who’s atop a very competitive, and mature conference. #4 Pine Bluffs and #5 Wright have played so well in 2026, and are definitely within reach of the 2A East title. It’s hosted by Pine Bluffs this year, which could be the edge the Hornets need when regional seeding is on the line. If you can avoid Thermopolis and Wyoming Indian on the other side, that could come into play late at state.
Scoring Leader: Mitchell Strohschein (Wright) — 23.8 points per game
Assists Leader: Jackson Robb (Wright), Cade Fornstrom (Pine Bluffs), Oakley Hicks (Shoshoni) — 5.3 assists per game
Rebounds Leader: Mitchell Strohschein (Wright) — 11.6 rebounds per game — *Most in Wyoming
Steals Leader: Zak Hastie (Thermopolis) — 3.7 steals per game
3A Boys

The 3A East conference is intriguing this year, but not particularly deep. It could be a toss-up for the three-and-four seeds heading into state, with a variety of teams vying for an opportunity to play in March. It’s going to come down to the middle-pack team like unranked Glenrock, Wheatland, and Torrington, whose next few weeks really matter. If they can avoid #3 Douglas (9-4) in the first round at regionals, that would secure a state-bid. The Bearcats currently lead the conference, trailed narrowly by #5 Buffalo (6-5). Douglas is the real deal, with wins over #1 Lovell and #2 Lander Valley this year, so it’s unlikely they’re afraid of anyone in the classification.
On the other side, the 3A West has been a gauntlet. It’s #1 Lovell and #2 Lander at the top of the conference, mixed in with #4 Powell, and extremely competitive Pinedale, Cody, and Lyman teams. Luckily, Lovell hosts the regional tournament, so it’s unlikely they won’t win at least one game, but really any of the aforementioned teams could fill out the final three spots. None of the teams matchup too well with Lovell, so it’s important to avoid them in the first round at regionals. Unfortunately, a very good ball club will not make it to state, and no one in the 3A West is safe.
Scoring Leader: Matthew Gosar (Pinedale) — 22.2 points per game
Assists Leader: Matthew Newman (Lovell) — 6.0 assists per game
Rebounds Leader: Owen Walker (Lovell) — 11.5 rebounds per game
Steals Leader: Cade Nelson (Powell) — 3.9 steals per game
4A Boys

You could make an argument for at least six teams to win the 4A State Tournament this year. The conferences are fairly evenly matched this year, with a slight edge to the 4A West. #2 Natrona County, #4 Green River, and #5 Rock Springs are all in the mix for the state’s best team. The 4A West is, traditionally a war of attrition, giving the Mustangs the nod for their physicality and depth. You could say the same thing about Green River and Rock Springs, Sweetwater County rivals. But you can’t forget unranked Star Valley and Riverton who are starting to play a lot better, who will likely be fighting for the 4-seed. This year’s 4A West tournament is hosted by Evanston High School.
The 4A East is tough too this year, with two of the best players in Wyoming – Gibson Williams (Thunder Basin), and Nate Miner (#1 Sheridan) headlining the classification. Campbell County (Gillette) hosts the 4A East tournament this year, which could come into play on the second and third days. The Camels are currently fighting for the third-or-fourth seed with Cheyenne Central and Cheyenne East. The next few weeks are crucial for middle-pack teams who want to avoid #1 Sheridan on day-one of the regional.
Scoring Leader: Gibson Williams (Thunder Basin) — 23.7 points per game
Assists Leader: Gibson Williams (Thunder Basin) — 5.4 assists per game
Rebounds Leader: Jack Andela (Campbell County) — 9.6 rebounds per game
Steals Leader: Gibson Williams (Thunder Basin) — 3.4 steals per game
